The Weather's Cooling Down: How To Keep Your Flannel Shirts Looking Their Very Best

Dan Stewart

Now that the weather is starting to cool down, it's time to bring the flannels out of storage. In fact, now's the perfect time to stock up on some new ones for the winter. Men's double-pocket flannel shirts are a great way to keep warm on those cold days. However, to keep them looking their best, you need to follow the right care instructions. Here are some simple tips that will help protect your flannel shirts.

Start With the Wash

When it comes to keeping your flannel shirts looking their best, you need to start with the wash. The first thing you need to do is use the right detergent for your flannel. To extend the life of your flannel shirts, always use a mild detergent that's free of phosphates and other harsh chemicals. Next, avoid using chlorine bleach. Finally, wash your flannel shirts in cool water on a gentle cycle.

Prevent the Lint

If you want to keep your flannel shirts soft and free of unsightly lint buildup, you may think about using a liquid fabric softener. However, that's actually a good way to reduce the life of your flannel. Instead, add about a quarter cup of white vinegar to the water each time you wash your shirts. Not only will the vinegar keep your flannels soft, but it will also reduce odors and lint.

Avoid Hot Dryers

If you normally toss your flannel shirts in the dryer and turn the temperature to hot, you want to make some changes. Hot dryers can cause serious problems for your flannel shirts. Instead, keep the setting at a cooler temperature and remove your shirts as soon as the cycle is completed. If your shirts are still a bit damp, hang them up and allow them to air dry the rest of the way. To avoid the risk of dryer damage altogether, hang your flannel shirts on an outdoor clothesline to dry.

Iron With Care

If you like the look of crisp flannel, you'll want to iron your shirts once they're dry. However, avoid turning the temperature to a hot setting. Using an iron that's too hot could leave your flannel shirt looking too shiny. The shine is a sign that you've damaged the fabric. Instead, keep the setting on a cooler temperature and turn your shirts inside out. Once your flannel shirts are inside out, apply a small amount of mist to the surface of the fabric and begin to iron.

Don't let your flannel shirts look worse for wear this winter. Use the care instructions provided here to keep them looking brand-new all season long.
