3 Questions To Know The Answers To When Investing In A Used Rock Breaker

Dan Stewart

Whether you have a small construction business or you mine for materials like gold, quartz, and diamonds, there is a pretty good chance that a hydraulic rock breaker will be part of your everyday operations. Even though this may be a necessary tool, it is also a tool that can be quite expensive to initially obtain when you buy new. Thankfully, used rock breakers are usually fairly easy to find among industrial tool users. However, before you buy a used rock breaker, it is an all-out must that you know for sure you are getting the best for your money. Take a look at a few of the questions you need to know the answers to before you make an offer on a used rock breaker for your business.

Do you need a stationary or mobile rock breaker for your business endeavors?

There are primarily two different types of hydraulic rock breakers: stationary and portable. Stationary rock breakers are usually mounted on a stable pedestal or a semi-stationary slew frame so it doesn't actually move. This means when the tool needs to be maneuvered into place, you will have to use your own equipment and manpower to do so. Portable rock breakers are typically smaller in size and are mounted on mobile frames that have wheels or tracks so they can be maneuvered into place without the use of other equipment.

Does the seller have a service record for the rock breaker?

Even though a rock breaker seems like a pretty basic machine with minimal parts and components, this powerful tool does have to be regularly serviced in order to function well for the long term. Therefore, it is important to ask the seller of the rock breaker if they have records of service that has been performed on the unit previously. You will want to know if the hydraulic fluid has ever been replaced, if the lift arm has ever had any major issues, and whether the motor has had to be mechanically overhauled at any point during the seller's ownership.

Are you interested in using an automation unit with your rock breaker?

Automation units connect to the rock breaker and allow for operation from a distance, which can be incredibly important in some application where it would not be safe for workers to be in specific areas during the breaking action. While you may be able to find a used rock breaker with the ability to be automated, you do need to keep in mind that older models may not have this option.
